Guillem Alonso
Guillem Alonso was born in Barcelona in 1973. At the age of nine, he put on his first tap shoes.
He has received several grants from the Government of Catalonia to study tap dance in New York with dancers such as Brenda Bufalino, Barbara Duffy, and Savion Glover, among others.
In 1993, he won First Prize at the World Tap Dance Championship in Switzerland, organized by the IDO (International Dance Organization).
During the 1993–94 season, he performed with the J.M. Flotats company at the Poliorama Theater in Barcelona in the musical Cal dir-ho?
During the 1995 holiday season, he danced as a soloist with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra for the show Yuletide Celebration.
Since then, he has been a member of the top tap dance companies in the United States, such as the American Tap Dance Orchestra, Manhattan Tap, and The Tap Collective in New York, and Steps Ahead in Los Angeles, with which he has performed throughout America and Europe.
In Spain, he has danced in the shows Keatoniana, New Orleans Jazz Tap, and Sax Tap, and has both danced in and choreographed El Nas Vermell and Scandal; he is also the director of the Barcelona Rhythm Tap company. He performed at the 1999 Goya Awards ceremony with Rosa M. Sardà, and organized and hosted the weekly Tap Jam, tap dance improvisation sessions at the Cova del Drac in Barcelona.
During the 2000–01 and 2001–02 seasons, he was a solo tap dancer in the show Fire Of Dance, with which he toured Poland, Germany, Austria, Italy, Sweden, Switzerland, Norway, and the Netherlands.
n September 2001, he performed on Broadway (NY) at the New Victory Theatre in the show *La Vida Es Ritmo*, which he created with the Camut Band company, and has participated in festivals in Edinburgh (Scotland), Toronto (Canada), New Haven (USA), Greenwich (Great Britain), and Tàrrega (Spain).
He is one of the few dancers who practice the Sand Dance style, through which he has gained international prestige and recognition.
As a teacher and organizer, Guillem Alonso has been the driving force behind a new generation of tap dancers in Barcelona.
Winner of the 2010 Dansacat Award in recognition of his professional career.
